It all began with a sickening crack…

… and a cloudless and otherwise boring summer’s midafternoon ended. The sky like a giant eggshell began to crack. The cracks, starting at the horizon, grew to cover the whole sky and from them a deep red light poured through until the pressure of doing so caused great pieces of the sky itself to fall away. A black void was left behind the pieces and the light which had been so pervasive quieted to a red glow that twisted and danced in great webs above us. We turned to the gods for comfort but found them deaf and mute and the worst was yet to come.
